Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy for Depressive Rumination
نویسنده
چکیده
Depressive rumination, defined as “behaviour and thoughts that focus one’s attention on one’s depressive symptoms and on the implications of these symptoms” (Nolen-Hoeksema, 1991, p.569) has been identified as a core process in the onset and maintenance of depression. Rumination is elevated in both currently and formerly depressed patients and tends to be elevated in women relative to men, i.e., in groups known to be at increased risk for depression (Riso et al., 2003; Roberts, Gilboa, & Gotlib, 1998). Prospective longitudinal studies have found that selfreported depressive rumination predicts the onset and maintenance of major depression and depressive symptoms (Nolen-Hoeksema, 2000; Spasojevic & Alloy, 2001). Furthermore, there is evidence that increased rumination is associated with less therapeutic responsiveness to both antidepressant and cognitive-behavioural interventions (Ciesla & Roberts, 2002; Schmaling, Dimidjian, Katon, & Sullivan, 2002). This article will highlight key issues in understanding depressive rumination and review state-of-the-art treatment approaches.

Rumination mediates the relationship between impaired cognitive control for emotional information and depressive symptoms: A prospective study in remitted depressed adults.
Impaired cognitive control may be an important vulnerability factor for depression. Moreover, impairments in cognitive control have been proposed as a crucial process underlying ruminative thinking. The present study investigates the influence of impaired cognitive control for emotional information on rumination and depressive symptoms in a prospective design with a 1 year follow up in a clinic...
متن کاملThe effects of rumination and negative cognitive styles on depression: a mediation analysis.
Research on cognitive models of depression has identified negative cognitive styles and rumination as risk factors for depression. The present study examined the hypothesis that rumination mediates the effect of negative cognitive styles on depression. Specifically, we evaluated the differential effects of two aspects of rumination, characterized by brooding and reflection, on the relationship ...
متن کاملThe relationship between rumination, avoidance and depression in a non-clinical sample.
Recent commentaries have proposed conceptualizations of rumination in terms of both cognitive and behavioral avoidance. This study examined the relationship between rumination, avoidance and depression using a newly developed self-report measure of avoidance in depression, the Cognitive-Behavioral Avoidance Scale (CBAS) [Ottenbreit, N.D., & Dobson, K.S. (2004). Avoidance and depression: The con...
متن کاملRumination-focused cognitive behaviour therapy vs. cognitive behaviour therapy for depression: study protocol for a randomised controlled superiority trial
BACKGROUND Cognitive behavioural therapy is an effective treatment for depression. However, one third of the patients do not respond satisfactorily, and relapse rates of around 30 % within the first post-treatment year were reported in a recent meta-analysis. In total, 30-50 % of remitted patients present with residual symptoms by the end of treatment. A common residual symptom is rumination, a...
متن کاملWorry and rumination: differential associations with anxious and depressive symptoms and coping behavior.
Worry and rumination are closely allied cognitive processes that impact on the experience of anxious and depressive symptoms. Using a prospective design, this study examined overlapping and distinct features of worry and rumination in relation to symptoms and coping behavior in a nonclinical sample of Singaporean college students. Worry and rumination were highly correlated, but they retained d...
